Barbecue lovers, sit down. What we are about to suggest might be too much for some of you to handle. While the following recipes are definitely mouth-wateringly delicious, you might find yourself wondering one thing. Where’s the beef?
In the spirit of going green, we’re suggesting everyone try and go meatless just one day a week. Why? Well, for one, the United Nations thinks it’s a great way to curb global warming. According to the UN, meat production accounts for nearly one-fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions and is also one of the biggest causes of land and water degradation. And with our society’s ever-increasing reliance on meat, the UN worries the earth won’t be able to sustain our eating habits for much longer.
Recently we had the pleasure of sitting down with Jeff Marek, host of CBC’s Hockey Night In Canada on Sirius Radio and 2008 Beijing Olympic reporter to chat about his career, co-hosts, recent dietary change and how he Chills.
Gourmet On The Lake: You grew up watching Hockey Night In Canada. What was your initial reaction when you received the job offer from CBC?
JM: I couldn’t believe it, actually. Like most people in my industry working at Hockey Night is a dream and that’s what I thought it would always remain for me. I was shocked but only too pleasantly so. It’s been the best choice I ever made professionally.
In three words describe your experience in Beijing.
Inspiring. Overwhelming. Amazing.
You play in a men’s hockey league. What NHLer (past or present) would you like to have a face-off with?
Bobby Orr has always been my guy. I don’t think there’s been anyone who had as profound an impact on the sport and changed the way the game was played. Orr made us look at the sport in an entirely different fashion and could do it all...skate, score, pass, check, fight. You name it, he did it, and better than anyone else, too.
