New Year’s Eve

By The Numbers
Posted by Mike Dojc on
November 25, 2010

Wave after wave of Pyrotechnics, Gourmet Gluttony, Daredevil Resolve and Organized Mass Merrymaking distilled down to their Bare Numerical Essence…

-2 Million: Throngs of wild partiers that flood Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana beach to celebrate the dawn of a brand new year.

-$14.93 million: New Year’s Eve box office record set by James Cameron’s Avatar. The previous NYE box office champ was 2004’s Meet the Fockers.

-266: Total goals scored in last year’s World Junior Championships. Three percent of those markers came courtesy of the hot stick of Saskatchewan’s Jordan Eberle. This New Year’s Eve catch Canada and Sweden face-off at 4 p.m. and then the U.S. and Switzerland clash at 8 p.m.

-19: Cast iron bells that ring out at Dublin, Ireland’s Christ Church on New Year’s Eve. It’s only once in a blue moon that all nineteen of the cathedral’s chimes go ding-dong. The cascade of tolling bells literally rings out the old year and rings in the new one.

-269: Feet X-Games icon Travis Pastrana jumped in a rally car jump to launch 2010 off with a gnarly world record-crushing feat. Pastrana punched the gas on his Subaru Impreza STI to get to 91 mph and then flew almost 100 feet further than the previous record holder before safely touching down on a floating barge.

-222: Years ago, Scottish poet Robert Burns penned what has become the ultimate stroke of midnight ditty. Auld Lange Syne is pretty unique for a sing-a-long in that while most are familiar with the hummable tune, very few know the actual words to it.
